A story about me playing the trombone

When I was in Grade 8 (St 6) we had to learn how to play instruments. The options were: trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, and the trombone. They passed the various instruments around the class and we all got a chance to play them. The only one I got to make a sound was the trombone, so I went with that one.

We had a cool trombone teacher who had long hair. He used to play 'When I Got High' on his trombone and let us leave class early so we could get lunch before the others. He also let us sleep in his class. One day parents were being shown around the school and they came to the music department and discovered everyone sleeping. It was awkward because they kept making a noise and we just wanted to sleep.

Years later I can't remember how to play the trombone. I know you move the slidey thing, but that's about all I know.

So this literally happens to me on an hourly basis. The trick is to write crap with the music on, and then never re-read it again. That way you build a good self-confidence that your writing is meaningful and moody and indie.

Why my life is pretty cool right now. And a Chuckle o' the day

At first when I saw this cartoon I didn't laugh, but now I find it funny. I think it might be that I had been in a funk, and the last little while has definitely pulled me out of my funk. I've hung out with good friends, calmed down on my busy-ness, and hung out more with God which is cool.

The momentum of my life is pretty cool right now. Things are going fairly well in all aspects: God-wise, work-wise, improv-wise, church-wise, friend-wise, and plus its spring, and everyone gets happy during spring because its like the best season ever.

So I hope this cartoon makes you chuckle, because it made me chuckle. But then again I'm in a good mood so it didn't take the absolute most hectic amount of work to make me chuckle.

Chuckle o' the day and my opinion on THE MEDIA

A few years ago I was at OR Tambo and our plane was delayed so I went to the Wimpy for coffee and to read the paper. I had been a regular newspaper reader; studying business and politics at the time had made me feel as though I should know what was happening in our country.

I picked up the paper and the top story was about the xenophobic attacks. There were pictures and stories about the intense brutality of the attacks. The next page was about government corruption, the next about some crime or another. I sat there paging through the paper and I just felt sick to be honest. Everything was always the same. People were forever killing each other; politicians were always corrupt. It just felt like a never ending cycle.

I decided then and there to stop reading the newspaper and stop watching the news on TV. It wasn’t a hard-and-fast rule, more like a lifestyle. I wasn’t going to sit and read pages and pages of how lame the world is. There was enough crap in my own life to make up for all the lameness that was happening out there.

However, a media-less society is a not a good thing. Without the media we wouldn’t know about xenophobia, we wouldn’t hold our politicians to account. I just don’t want to have to fill my mind with worries and fears about our ‘crumbling world’. If nobody exposed the truth about Apartheid the world wouldn’t have imposed the sanctions they did. So I’m all for the media, just not for me.

I feel like I’m choosing to focus on problems I can change, rather than problems I never will and never plan to solve. I’d rather make the change around me instead of sitting reading endless reports about how psychotic the Oslo killer was. Because that just bleaks me out, and then I don’t do anything.

Maybe you’re different. Maybe you’re the same. Good luck either way.

Chuckle o' the day

So with the supposed end of the world coming on Saturday I thought I'd put up a rapture themed Chuckle O' The Day. This cartoon comes courtesy of Pearls Before Swine.

Chuckle o' the other day

I tried to post this the other day, but blogger was having problems so I'm only posting it now, but it still made me chuckle. This post comes courtesy of Buttersafe.

Chuckle o' the day

In the spirit of Friday and the death o' the weekdays I decided to make today a double header o' Pearls Before Swine with death themes. These are funny and if you don't laugh then something bad must've just happened to you because its fair funny.

Chuckle o' the day

My friend Brett sporadically sends me Pearls Before Swine comics. I like Pearls, and this one gave me a good chuckle early in the morn.

Chuckle o' the day

It makes me mad when people say I turned and ran like a scared rabbit. Maybe it was like an angry rabbit, who was running to go fight in another fight, away from the first fight.

This chuckle also makes me think of the band Frightened Rabbit who are totally rad and you should totally listen to them if you haven't yet. They have been my band of choice to wake up to at work in the morning. That makes them cool. Well not really, they were probably cool before then, plus they're Scottish so they come pre-cooled.

Chuckle o' the day

I've been looking for a Chuckle o' the Day for a while, and maybe its because I've been focus-faced for the last week or two but I haven't had anything that I chuckled at. That is until I saw this.

Chuckle o' the day

Today's chuckle came from Jack Handey, my source of funny when work is getting boring and I need a good laugh.

"I'll take that little one, way in the back," I said. "That little collie mix?" said the animal shelter guy. "No," I said, "the other one behind him." "The gray terrier?" he said. "He's gray," I said, "but way in the back, in the corner." "You mean the water faucet?" he said. I realized then it was a water faucet, but I didn't want to look like a jerk, so I said, "Yeah, that's the one I want." It ended up costing me almost five hundred dollars to get that faucet removed. But you know, I've still got that faucet, and I wouldn't trade it for any dog in the world.

Chuckle o' the day

I guess we were kinda poor when we were kids, but we didn't know it. That's because my dad always refused to let us look at the family's financial records.
